Message in a Bottle

When Bingie resident Rudie Langevelt was walking along Grey Rocks Beach near his home south of Narooma he wasnt expecting to stumble upon a message in a bottle.

The washed up Johnny Walker Black Label bottle, with a slightly mangled lid, contained two rolled-up pieces of paper.

But alas instead of the fabled pirate treasure map the bottle contained a P&O brochure of Wala Island in Vanuatu and a business card from South Australia.

When Rudie found the business card he rang the number in South Australia. The gentleman whose name was on the card was on holidays but his secretary took the call and confirmed that the man had indeed been on a P&O cruise to Vanuatu in August last year.

”His secretary had a great laugh about it,” Rudie said.

On Monday, Rudie contacted the man, Tim Donaldson and spoke to him.

Mr Donaldson confirmed that he and the two men he was travelling with had all put messages into bottles and thrown them overboard at the same time.

Wala Island, Vanuatu is located South 15 deg 59 min; East 167 deg 23 min.

The bottle was found at Bingie South 36 deg 00 min; East 150 deg 08 min.

Since August, the message in the bottle has travelled the straight line distance from Wala Island of around 2800km.

Rudie would like the message in a bottle to continue its journey around the world and has plans to relaunch the message in the bottle later this month.
